What a Twist! How social technology killed surprise movie endings | The Next Great Generation

Hollywood has relied on twist endings for decades. The Twilight Zone, Psycho, The Usual Suspects and The Sixth Sense were all carefully constructed to wow the audience by the detonation of a final reveal. It used to be that a friend or family member might spoil the story — “Can you believe he was dead all along?” — was thrown into casual conversation before you even have the chance
to cover your ears and hum to yourself. But these days, the (intentional
